Brushing Techniques for Kids

We recommend a gentle, short, back and forth motion to remove plaque and clean their teeth. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle towards the teeth and gums and move it back and forth in short strokes, about a half tooth wide. Be sure to brush the inside and outside surfaces of each tooth, as well as the top and bottom. For the chewing surfaces, hold the brush flat and brush gently. Finally, clean the tongue to remove debris. Don't forget to floss between teeth daily to remove plaque and food particles.

Starting Brushing Early

As soon as your child's first teeth begin to erupt, start cleaning them with a moist washcloth. Gradually transition to a soft child's toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Keep in mind that too much fluoride can stain your child's teeth, so use only a small amount until they are able to spit it out.

  • Brush your teeth together at the same time.
  • Let your child choose their toothbrush from a selection featuring their favorite characters.
  • Have your child brush their teeth first, with your help if necessary.
  • Read children's books about tooth brushing together.
  • Brush your teeth as a family at the same time.
  • Demonstrate the importance of brushing by letting your child eat or drink something that temporarily stains their teeth, then brush them clean.
